Disabling unused switch ports is a simple method that many network administrators use to help protect their networks from unauthorized access. Disabling an unused port stops traffic from flowing through the port(s).

Often unactivated and unused ports are left unconfigured. These ports make it possible for attackers to access anywhere. Shutting down unused free ports and assigning them to an unused VLAN in the environment eliminates this risk.
